Description of the project:

The Roman harbour of the Colonia Claudia Ara Agrippinensium (Cologne) was situated in a tributary of the Rhine underneath today´s old city of Cologne. The Colonia was located on a flood safe plateau, 10 m above water level. Today the Roman layers are 14 m below the modern surface. The construction of the subway allowed the archaeological investigation of large areas of the Roman harbour. The excavations revealed large quantities of animal bones, oyster shells, pottery, wooden objects and other finds of daily use. Among the nearly 2 million objects were 350 amphora fragments with tituli picti which demonstrate the import of wine, oil, fish sauce and other liquids and food: Wine was imported from Southern Spain, Southern France, Italy, Crete and the coasts of Asia Minor; olive oil from Spain; and fish sauces from Spain and Southern Italy. The tituli picti give an insight into the commodity flow from the Mediterranean to the Rhineland during the 1st and the beginning 2nd century. Besides the examination of 90000 amphora sherds from Cologne, finds from other Roman sites for example Bonn, should also be explored. The study of the Cologne amphoras in comparison to finds from other harbour sites on the Rhine should confirm the first results and give an overview of the shipped goods on the Rhine during the Roman period.
